Stop Barking Dogs

How to make a dog stop barking is a goal of many dog owners. Dog barking control is very important. A well-trained dog is a quiet dog. They should only bark when there is a safety issue or danger. Dog barking training is very helpful.

Dogs use their voice to communicate with us. Their voice is their bark. So training not to talk (bark) or dog barking control must be realistic. There are times and situations where they will bark because that is how they are made.

So why do dogs bark?

Briefly, dogs bark because of who they are and how they are bred. Dogs like Rottweillers, Dobermans, and German Shepherds who are trained to guard, bark to let you know of danger. Beagles and Bloodhounds bay when the scent their quarry so help out their owners. Small dogs, like our Miniature Schnauzer, like to hear their own voices so talk a lot.

Ignoring specific breed barking habits, however, there are certain circumstances where just about any dog will bark:

He’s bored.

He’s hungry.

Your dog is feeling alone.

He needs a potty break.

Your dog senses another animal.

He wants to play.

Your dog is feeling uncertain about his surroundings.

If your dog is barking for any of the above items, you don’t really have a dog barking problem. He is performing as dogs are bred and trained to perform.

So now that you know when they will just bark, any other circumstances barking isn’t right. So to stop dogs from barking there are some great skills you can learn and use.

If you’re dog barks to try to manipulate, or bully you into doing something, you’ll definitely want to put a stop to that. If she has you trained to react when she wants to play, guess what? She’ll continue to do that until you become the boss. The best way to do this is to ignore her. Not it a passive way, where you don’t pay any attention to her, but in an active way. There’s a real art to this, and you can learn to do it in the dog training course described at the end of this article.

So maybe he is not trying to control you, maybe he just likes to hear himself speak. Here is a good place to control him with hand gestures, not hitting him of course. The method is kind and is set up again to let him know who is in charge. There is not enough space to explain this type of dog barking training, but if you click on the link below you can learn how. Other skills, such as the highly acclaimed “dog whisperer” technique is also available in this information.

Stop fighting with your dog. I hope that you will find more quiet in your home with these tips and the information available below.

Dog Teeth – Problems

Tuesday 7 October 2008 @ 1:03 am
by Geraldine Dimarco

Dog teeth cleaning should be something which is done regularly as a part of your pet care routine. If possible, your dog’s teeth should be brushed daily, or least every other day. Dogs are just as susceptible as we are to tooth disease, so it is important to make sure that our dog’s teeth are kept clean and free of tartar.

Dental Health and Hygiene in Dogs

Dogs can get many of the same tooth, gum and mouth diseases as we can – and since your dog can’t tell you if they have a toothache, pet owners have to make sure to take care of their dog’s teeth. Left alone, a tooth infection can lead to more serious problems with their vital organs.

You dog’s diet has a real impact on their dental health. Dog food and treats which are fortified and made specifically to keep your dogs’ teeth in good shape are a healthy choice for your pet. While you can have your dogs’ teeth cleaned by your vet, this is very expensive and since your dog must be anesthetized for this to be done, can actually be dangerous for your pet! Professional cleaning should only be done in extreme cases.

Getting Your Pet Used to Dog Teeth Cleaning

With some patience, you can train your dog to accept tooth brushing. Adult dogs and puppies can both be trained by starting with your finger and some peanut butter.

Your pet will lick your finger (and the peanut butter). You can start rubbing their teeth and gums while praising your dog. After a few days you r dog will become accustomed to this and you can start trying it with a piece of gauze wrapped around your finger. Rub the teeth and gums with your finger just as you would with a toothbrush. When your dog gets used to this procedure, you can start using a real toothbrush.

Never use toothpaste intended for humans on your dog as ingredients such as baking soda will upset their stomach. Also, dog toothpaste is specially formulated for their teeth and will have an appealing smell and taste to help make the process a bit easier. Start out by letting your dog lick a dollop of toothpaste off of the brush first, then use more to finally start brushing.

Lift your dogs’ gums so that you can reach their teeth, especially the canines. Hold the brush at a 45 degree angle for the best result. This lets you clean the gums and teeth at the same time. Brush using a circular motion and don’t forget your dogs’ back teeth, which are more susceptible to disease and decay.

Make dog teeth cleaning a happy occasion for your dog. Keep low key to prevent your dog from getting too excited to hold still. You should only need abut a minute to get your dogs’ teeth clean and make sure that they stay healthy and happy.

Home Remedy for Puppy Parvo

Thursday 2 October 2008 @ 9:17 am
by Geraldine Dimarco

Before checking out dog parvo symptoms, let us take a look at what parvo is, what it can do to your do, and how it is spread. Parvo virus was first identified in 1978 and within two years’ it had spread all over the world. Over the years, the parvo virus has mutated into two different strains and there is evidence of a third strain present in Italy, Spain and Vietnam. Every case of canine parvo virus, or CPV, comes from the first two strains. Every different species has its own parvo virus and it cannot be spread outside of the species, so there is a human parvo virus, a canine parvo virus, a feline parvo virus, and so on.

Parvo virus cannot be spread directly from a dog to a cat or from a bird to a cat, but it can be spread by contact. For example if you cat happens to wander through your neighbor’s yard and picks up the virus on her feet, she can bring it into your home and may infect your dog that way. Unfortunately, our 8 month old puppy that we acquired from the pound recently came down with parvo virus. She had all of the classic dog parvo symptoms, yet we did not realize what was wrong. We took her to our vet and treatment was commenced immediately. After a four day stay at the veterinary hospital, Lucy was ready to come home. And although we have since found out about more natural parvo virus treatments, we were actually very pleasantly surprised by our vet bill!

The parvovirus works in one of two ways through the intestines or the heart. The intestinal infection is picked up by the animal through oral contact with contaminated feces. In other words through the feces of another canine who is infected. The virus then attacks rapidly dividing cells in the lymph nodes, intestinal crypts and bone marrow. This will allow normally occurring bacteria from the intestine to enter the blood stream making the animal septic. The virus will be shed in the stool for up to three weeks making this disease very contagious to non-vaccinated pets.

The cardio form of the infection is most often seen in puppies that are infected in utero or shortly after birth. It must be noted that the cardiac form of CPV is less common since the mother usually passes immunity on to her pups from birth. The virus will attack the heart in the infected pup and result in death shortly thereafter.

Dog parvo symptoms are usually present within 3 to 10 days of contact. They include vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea and fever. The diarrhea will cause severe dehydration and secondary infections. Rather than dying from the virus itself, it is usually the secondary infections that kill.

Survival rate depends on how quickly parvo virus is diagnosed and treatment is begun. If it is not caught early enough, the best treatment is an IV through which fluids are pushed to re-hydrate the dog more quickly. In addition to the fluids, antibiotic and anti-nausea shots may be given intramuscularly. With the proper care the prognosis is good, but without it your dog is sentenced to an early death. There has been some evidence that the human antiviral, Tamiflu, can be effective in treating parvovirus, but there are not studies to substantiate this. A veterinarian will recommend that you get your pet vaccinated against parvo approximately eight weeks after the puppy is weaned. With the prevalence of this virus and its ability to kill, some precaution should be taken to protect your dog. Get your puppy vaccinated ? we speak from experience!
