Avoiding the Dog Training Mistakes

Probably any dog owner can tell you that training your dog isn’t always as easy as it seems it should be. Most owners assume that after a few days or sessions of rehearsing commands and actions then the dog should just pick up on basic skills and that should be it.

And you may well discover that the training, which you thought would be a quick and easy task, actually takes you much longer than you had expected. But this is not always the fault of the dog, most often the fault lies with the owner.

For one thing, it’s good to remember that training your dog should be a positive experience for you and your dog. It’s too easy for owners to get caught up in every little “mistake” that a dog makes and concentrates on punishing these mistakes rather than concentrating on rewarding a dog when she obeys or does something right

It’s a very common mistake when training your dog to forget how much dogs crave that attention and approval from the owner and will do just about anything to get it. Concentrating on that, rather than on punishment, is going to be much more effective.

And another common mistake that a lot of owners make is in thinking that your dog understands English. They don’t, all they can do is to associate a few words with certain actions.

Its no good yelling at them if they do something wrong, as they will probably not connect your yelling with their mistake. Just show kindness, and patience.

Don’t make the mistake when training your dog of getting upset if she doesn’t understand you or continues to make the same mistake if you’re not catching her right then and there. Punishing her after the fact is pointless and ineffective.

And the last mistake you may be making when training your dog is getting excessively angry at her when she doesn’t make the progress you think she should be making. Dogs are not spiteful and don’t do things purposely to make you mad, so if she’s not progressing as you think she should, either your expectations are unreasonable, you are making some other mistakes in training, or it’s time to see a professional trainer.

A professional trainer may be able to identify any problem straight away, and, more importantly, may know just how to fix it.

7 Tips for Optimal Pet Health

by Mr. John Sommer, PhD.

Assuming that you are a pet owner and that you probably own either a cat or a dog (as that is what most pet owners do) I am not going to teach you something that you do not know but rather bring your attention to something that you might have forgotten.

* Exercise amount: Whether you have a cat or a dog it is vitally important that you make sure that it gets the right about of physical activity. Larger pets will require more exercise than smaller pets.

* Way to exercise: If your cat is a stay at home cat you will need to take it out into nature. If you live in a big city you must take it for daily walks. All dogs (even the smaller ones) will need at least one daily walk and for larger breeds you need two or three walks a day of at least 30 minutes.

* Nutrition amount: I know you want to do what best for your pet and spoiling them by giving them all they can eat will not benefit them at all. They will get fat and the excess fat will harm their health condition.

* Proper nutrition: Make sure to provide your pet with healthy organic foods. If youre in doubt what would be right for your particular pet be sure to ask your VET. Dont guess and end up making vital mistakes.

* Affection: Show your pets that you truly and deeply love them. Hug them and tell them that you love them. You might think that they do not understand what you’re saying but I promise you that they can sense what you feel.

* Insurance and medication: Be sure to sign up for a pet insurance in case of emergencies. You never know what could happen and not being able to pay for proper surgery and medication will not be something you want to experience.

* Plan: Make sure you use a schedule for all major appointments. Be sure to note the regular VET check-ups and that your pet gets any medication or vaccines that it’ll need. Small things like these will add up in the long run.
